Dolphins: The IMAX Movie
Bob Talbot - MacGillvray Freeman Films - 1997
Have you seen the IMAX movie Dolphins?
If so, you may have recognized a few of the playful stars from your last Wild Dolphin Adventure with Bimini Undersea.
During the summer of 1997, World Famous Wildlife Cinematographer Bob Talbot (Free Willy I & II, Flipper) came to Bimini the team from MacGillvray Freeman Films to work with Bill, Nowdla, and the Bimini Undersea team filming portions of the IMAX format movie called DOLPHINS. . Much of the movies story was to chronicle/re-enact the work that had been done by researcher Kathleen Dudzinski with Wild Atlantic Spotted Dolphins. Although most of Kathleen's early research and her Dolphin Communication Project were done in the Northern Bahamas on the Little Bahamas Bank, the film crew had a different plan when it came to filming the re-enactment.
At the time, Talbot believed that the team had a better chance at getting the shots they needed working with Nowdla and Bill and Bimini's population of Wild Atlantic Spotted Dolphins. Bimini was only one of a number of places that Bob and his coworkers went to film Dolphins for this project as the film had a number of separate story threads that it follows.
As the movie is mostly a re-enactment of events that occurred prior to Nowdla's discovery of Bimini's Wild Dolphins, no one from Bimini Undersea ever appear "on screen" in this production. None of Bimini Undersea's vessels are part of the film. And, there is no mention of Bimini as a destination.
The film is great and received rave reviews when it ran in IMAX theaters. If you get a chance, go out and rent it or purchase a copy of your own (see Amazon link below) While you're watching, keep an eye out for familiar faces, fins, rostrums etc.....
Shortly after filming was completed, The Dolphin Communication Project and Bimini Undersea began a cooperative Research Project collecting data about Bimini's Wild Dolphin population. That cooperative program continues to this day with DCP Researchers accompanying Nowdla, Bill, and the Bimini Undersea staff on most Bimini Undersea Wild Dolphin Adventure trips.
