The Dolphin Communication Project (DCP) has just completed another research season on Bimini working with Bill & Nowdla Keefe's Wild Dolphin Adventures. This years research team made up of Kelly Melillo and Darcie Blanding once again began in May and concluded the 2006 project in mid-September.

The ongoing mission of the Bimini project is to identify and catalog the members of Bimini's Atlantic Spotted Dolphin pod. This year, the project expanded to include a few of the resident Bottlenosed Dolphins also.........

The Dolphin Communication Project is under the direction of Dr. Kathleen Dudzinski. The project first became well known when Dr. Dudzinski and her research became the subject of the IMAX film DOLPHINS. Much of that film was shot on location around Bimini by world renown Cinematographer Bob Talbot with the assistance of Bill and Nowdla and their Wild Dolphin staff. It was during the filming of the movie that Kathleen first met Nowdla and Bill. Following the release of the film, discussions began which enabled DCP to put researchers aboard our Wild Dolphin Adventure vessels each summer season. The idea took off and the project is ongoing.

The compiling of information that takes place during a trip involves spotting, counting, photographing, and identifying the various Dolphins encountered during the trips. Also, during the actual swims, the Dolphins are video taped and sound recorded using special equipment designed and developed by Kathleen and her DCP research team. The video tape is then analyzed for other DCP related research which revolves around Dolphin communication patterns.

Besides just compiling data, Kelly and Darcie became important members of the Wild Dolphin Adventure team. Each week they would give a fascinating Wild Dolphin presentation to the guests. Their presentation included a detailed explanation of their research project as well as answering any questions people might have about Dolphins in general. This became a highlight of the weeks activities. They would also do this same presentation in the local schools as well as for various civic groups. Aboard the boat, during the trips, many guests sought them out for more information regarding their findings and observations. Having them aboard for our trips was just fabulous.

The DCP/Wild Dolphin Adventure research project will resume in the Spring of 2008 and we are anxiously awaiting the DCP team's return
